Who We Are:
Metro CareRing is a non-profit organization, offering food and toiletries, utility and transportation assistance, job readiness items and identification documentation. Utilizing over 150 regular volunteers and four full-time paid staff, Metro CareRing serves approximately 35,000 individuals and families each year. Metro CareRing strives to create a "ring of care" around the people in the community most needing emergency assistance.
Who We Serve:
About one third of the households receiving services at Metro CareRing are considered “working poor”: they are working, but do not earn enough to meet their basic needs. Over one third is on fixed incomes, and while their incomes never change, the cost of living in Denver continues to rise. Other clients have experienced a financial setback, such as unemployment, loss of a family member, or medical emergency. Many have physical or mental disabilities and cannot work. Most have little or no money for food, clothing, child or health care, or transportation.
What We Do:
- Provide bags of food, toiletries and work-related resources to meet immediate needs.
- Provide a listening ear and short-term solutions to current situations.
- Educate and mobilize the community to affect long-term solutions to hunger, poverty and homelessness.
Where We Come From:
|
In 1974, downtown Denver leaders came together to address a significant problem. Families, seniors, and other individuals in Denver’s core were going hungry. Churches were responding by providing piecemeal emergency programs but were not coordinating with others and often provided duplicate services. By founding Central Denver Community Services- later to become Metro CareRing (MCR)- these leaders were able to pool the resources of five founding faith communities in a single location, providing emergency food and assistance to larger number of families and had a better mechanism, to leverage volunteers, funds and in-kind contributions. Over the years, the model expanded and new supporters started contributing gifts and volunteers. In 2006, Metro CareRing opened a satellite food pantry in Aurora, Ansar Pantry, in collaboration with the Muslim community.
Today, many groups within this area and beyond pool their resources efficiently through Metro CareRing. Individuals, foundations, corporations, faith communities and businesses provide financial and in-kind support making MCR the largest food pantry serving metro Denver.
